Cayuse Western Americana was started in 1997 by Mary Schmitt, who had been selling Cowboy and Indian antiques under her own name since 1989. During this time the American public's fascination with the cowboy has rapidly grown to challenge the already strong market in Amercian Indian art and artifacts. Having seen so many items come and go has enabled Cayuse to offer a collection that is not only unique, but guaranteed against fraud or forgery.

And we're proud to feature some contemporary artists who are perpetuating the hand work of the Old West: Clint Orms Silversmiths and Engravers; Susan Adams, Jeweler and Metalsmith; and Amy Raab, Photographer.

We strive to pull together items of the best quality, condition and collectibility even though many of our clients don't consider themselves collectors (they're in denial). We are pleased to count among our clients Ralph Lauren, the Autry Musuem of Western Heritage, the Wolfsonian Museum, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and Industry, and many others.

Cayuse and Mary have been featured in many antiques publications, as well as on Personal FX, in In Style Magazine, Cowboys & Indians Magazine, Teton Home Magazine, and Jackson Hole Magazine. The Schmitt/Cayuse collection of skirts, boots, saddles, spurs and other antique cowgirl items is one of the largest private collections in the country, and was featured in Elizabeth Clair Flood's "Cowgirls, Women of the Wild West". Mary is also on the board of directors of the National Bit, Spur and Saddle Collectors Association (NBSSCA).

We hope you enjoy our collection enough to send us your comments. We'd love to hear from you!
